In this presentation we will explain the roots of the Television from when it was first thought of and prototyped to now as it is still evolving. The history of the Television is very large and almost impossible to cover in one website. Before Television people of America usually got their news or entertainment from other sources, such as the Newspaper, The Radio, and even passed down orally. Later on in time the Newspaper and The Television would become very important keys to all of news. You can think of the radio as the first idea of a T.V.. The Television branches off from the radio, and would soon become it's own great invention. The first Television ever was created a lot earlier than people might think. It was created in 1926 by a man from Scotland named J.L. Baird! And soon after other countries would try to prefect the idea of a machine that produced images electronically.
THE FIRST TELEVISION
1928 GE "Octagon"
Here is an example of one of the first American television sets. As you can see, it is not much and it could use a lot of work. But this was only one of the first sets which was in 1928. Later on, other countries would try to produce their own types of Television sets. Some were better than others and some were harder to use. Some older T.V.'s used crank handles to function. In America scientists worked hard to create a good working T.V... And in 1939 the
RCA TT5 was created. It has a very small screen which had black and white images. During the time of World War II, Televisions were used for war. 1942-1944 - German began Television broadcasts from Paris via Eiffel Tower, and in America the USA experiments with TV-guided missiles in Pacific.
In 1948 a new Television set was released by America, and it is similar to the RCA TT5, but it came with a little more to it. This T.V. set was called the Admiral 19A111. It was founded in Chicago. This was very small, about the size of a shoe box, and it was very wide. It held it's own speakers and station tuner.
American TV was becoming more and more popular as time progressed and less money was spent on wars. And as the television became more popular, inventors began looking for more ways to make the Television even better than before. Causing better sound quality, bigger screens and even color! The 1957 RCA 21CD7916 was also created with color. Giving people a wider variety and better choices in their TV selections. Around 1949 there were as many as a million TV sets sold in America. In the 1960 TV became natural in America, having about 50 million sold. This was also around the time where color began to be added into TV. Also in the 1960's there were many manufactures than began business with TV. Some popular manufactures that you might hear today are Toshiba, Sony, Sanyo, Samsung, Philips, and Panasonic. The first prototype for a plasma display monitor was invented in July 1964 at the University of Illinois. After that inventors began thinking of different ways to broadcast plasma. Then came LCD screens which can be commonly found on many TV's today, and even cell phones. Plasma TV's are still evolving today now having 3D effects and HD. Imagine what TV will be like 50 years from now. Will it be similar or will it be virtual?
It is obvious that Television is a huge part of American life. Don't believe me? Here are some statistics! The percentage of households that have at least one Television somewhere is an entire 99 percent! The average household has at least 2 televisions in their usage. Annually Americans watch 250 billion hours of Television! The average youth spends about 900 hours in school every year. And 1500 hours watching television. To me it looks like the TV is doing more of the talking, not the teachers. TV can be a very fun thing to watch, especially when feeling lazy. This is why the TV was such a great invention that just might never stop getting larger and larger! Back in time radios were used to get the latest information, and now TV has finally taken over. And for good!
